World Content News – Jetzt geht es ans Eingemachte: Hohe russische Beamte haben am Mittwoch zum ersten Mal bestätigt, dass das in der Ostsee gehijackte Schiff eine verdächtige Ladung an Bord gehabt haben könnte.

Ob bald auch die zahlreichen Spekulationen bestätigt werden, dass die angeblich entführte Arctic Sea möglicherweise Waffen oder sogar nukleares Material transportierte?

Soweit will der leitende Untersuchungsbeamte in Moskau, Alexander Bastrykin, natürlich nicht gehen. Aber:

„Wir schließen nicht aus, dass die Arctic Sea noch etwas anderes transportierte als Holz„

gestand er in einem Interview mit der amtlichen Regierungszeitung „Rossiyskaya Gazeta“ ein. Die Zeitung selbst schränkte allerdings kurz danach ein, dass dies nicht bedeute, dass Informationen vorlägen, die auf eine illegale Fracht hindeuten würden.

Der Generalstabschef der Russischen Streitkräfte, Nikolai Makarow fügte hinzu: „Wir wissen nicht was sie transportierten, wir wissen nur es war Holz – was sonst noch, müsse durch die Untersuchung geklärt werden.“ Es wäre außerdem nicht „besonders klar“ welche Motive hinter der Kaperung lägen.

Soweit der Stand vom 26. August. Grinz :-). Die Behörden haben die runtergelassenen Hosen längst wieder hochgezogen. Eigentlich sind die Untersuchungen inzwischen abgeschlossen, seitdem gab es keine diesbezüglichen Verlautbarungen mehr dazu. Die zuständige Kommission hatte dafür in der letzten Woche Bilder von Beweismitteln veröffentlicht, die belegen sollen, dass das Schiff tatsächlich entführt worden sei.

Und auch aus dem für gestern angekündigten Eintreffen in dem algerischen Hafen Bejaia scheint vorerst nichts zu werden. Laut dem Eigner Solchart befindet sich das Schiff seit Tagen 65 Seemeilen östlich von Gibraltar. An Bord sollen sich bewaffnete Soldaten und die restlichen vier Besatzungsmitglieder befinden.

Deren Angehörige hatten laut dem Seefahrtsexperten Michail Wojtenko am Wochenende an Ministerpräsident Putin persönlich appelliert, ihre Männer endlich nach Hause zu schicken, da sie unter einem schlechten Gesundheitszustand litten.

Nicht nur das Interesse der Presse an der Arctic Sea hat inzwischen schlagartig nachgelassen. Weder Russlands Regierung noch den Eigentümern und den Holzfirmen scheint es besonders nahe zu gehen, was mit dem Irrschiff und seiner vielleicht schon verschimmelten Ladung in nächster Zeit passieren soll. Wartet man etwa darauf, dass letztendlich das Meer sich des beschädigten Schiffes erbarmt?

Dabei ist die Reederei Solchart Management, mal heißt es die Firma wäre pleite und dann auch wieder nicht, in letzter Zeit doch besonders vom Schicksal gebeutelt worden, statistisch gesehen so arg, dass man es gar nicht glauben mag:

Neben den Scherereien mit der „Arctic Sea“ wäre z.B. das der Reederei anvertraute Schiff „Arctic Spirit“ im Juli dieses Jahres, wenige Tage vor dem Überfall auf die Arctic Sea, im finnischen Hafen von Loviisa beinahe untergegangen. Ursache: Wassereinbruch im Maschinenraum. Kurioserweise konnte sie die Fahrt mit Holz an Bord bereits wenige Stunden später fortsetzen.

Und vor wenigen Tagen erst der nächste Hammer Neptuns: Ein weitere Schwester der „Arctic Sea“, der Frachter „Arctic Sky“, ebenfalls unter liberianischer Flagge, ebenfalls in Malta registriert und mit einer russischen Mannschaft besetzt, ist am Samstag vor der schwedischen Küste nördlich von Stockholm auf Grund gelaufen. Zuerst hieß es das Schiff sei gesunken, späteren Meldungen zufolge wurde das beschädigte Schiff nach Riga in eine Reparaturwerft geschleppt.

Dr. Alexander von Paleske – 27.9. 2009 — Ein bisher ungelöstes Problem bei der Aufklärung der Hintergründe der Arctic Sea- Kaperung war der Zeitablauf.
Wie konnte, bei der relativ kurzen Zeitspanne zwischen dem offenbaren Aufladen von Waffen und der dann folgenden Kaperung, eine derarartige Aktion vorbereitet werden, eine Aktion , welche nicht nur die Rekrutierung von kräftigen Kleinkriminellen, sondern auch deren “Kapertraining” voraussetzt.

Auch der Mossad, der offenbar hinter der Kaperung steckt, hätte das wohl in der kurzen Zeit kaum schaffen können.
Wenn nicht – ja wenn nicht – dies nicht der erste, sondern einer von mehreren Transporten war, denen nun mit der Kaperung der Garaus gemacht werden sollte.

Hinweise für Mehrfachtransport
Es gibt jetzt erste Hinweise dafür, dass dies offenbar tatsächlich nicht der erste Transport dieser Art war..
Wie die Internetseite Russland aktuell meldete ist der Frachter Arctic Sea in den letzten vier Jahren angeblich mehrfach “vom Radar verschwunden”.

Das automatische Identifikationssystem AIS der Arctic Sea war dieses Jahr zwischen dem 1. und 11. April abgeschaltet. Ebenfalls zwischen dem 13. Februar und 4. März 2008 und zwischen dem 26. April und 14. Mai 2007 . Immer mit angeblicher Holzladung an Bord und immer an der gleichen Stelle, nämlich der Strasse von Gibraltar am Eingang zum Mittelmeer.

Es fällt schwer, hier an Zufälle zu glauben. Offenbar sollte die wahre Destination verschleiert werden.

Verbliebene Schiffscrew ohne Kommunikation
Die auf der Arctic Sea verbliebene russische Schiffscrew, neben dem Kapitän Sergej Zaretsky noch zwei weitere Männer, konnte bisher keinen Kontakt zu ihren Angehörigen aufnehmen. Sie mussten angeblich die SIM-Cards für ihre Mobiltelefone abgeben.
Die Angehörigen haben nun an das Internationale Rote Kreuz sowie an die Regierungen Maltas, Finnlands und Russlands appelliert,
die Rückkehr oder zumindest die Kontaktaufnahme zu ermöglichen.
Offenbar hat die russische Regierung Veranlassung, jeden Aussenkontakt zu unterbinden. Die Mitglieder der Crew sollen wohl, wie schon die bisher heimgekehrten elf Crewmitglieder, in Russland erst einmal in die Mangel genommen werden, wohl wieder im Lefortowo-Gefängnis. Motto: Schweigen ist Gold, Reden sehr gefährlich.

Der Crew steht also wohl noch Einiges bevor.

Mittlerweile ist das Schiff offenbar im Mittelmeer auf dem Weg ins Schwarze Meer, nachdem die russische Regierung den Plan aufgegeben hat, das Schiff in den Hafen von Las Palmas/Kanarische Inseln einlaufen zu lassen.
Die international Presse wäre dort gewesen, und diesen Auflauf sah man offenbar nicht allzu gerne. Zumal die Gefahr bestand, dass ein Crewmitglied ein paar “unvorsichtige” Bemerkungen hätte machen können.

Nachtrag 3.10.2009
Heute hat in der britischen Financial Times die nach Archangelsk gereiste Journalistin Catherine Belton einen Artikel mit dem Titel „Vexed Voyage“ veroeffentlicht, der noch einige weitere Indizien beisteuert, die im Wesentlichen die von uns von Anfang an aufgrund von Indizien vertretene Einschätzung bestätigen, dass es sich um eine Geheimdienstoperation, vermutlich des Mossad, handelte.

Die Crewmitglieder der Arrctic Sea haben sich aus Furcht geweigert, nähere Angaben zu machen.

die Arctic Sea auf dem Weg zu den Kanaren, nach anderen Quellen bereits dort, angeblich nichts ausser Holz an Bord. Aber die russischen Ermittler brauchen noch ein paar Tage – für ein Schiff von 100 Meter Länge.

Knapp drei Wochen sind sie schon an Bord, auch für russische Ermittler eine verdammt lange Zeit. Mikrobiologen, die mit einem Mikroskop das Schiff abgesucht hätten, würden wohl kaum länger brauchen.

Was immer sich an Bord befand, und nicht aus Holz bestand, die Öffentlichkeit soll und darf es nicht erfahren. Eine offenbar „gesäuberte“ Arctic Sea soll jetzt den maltesischen Behörden übergeben werden und zwar nicht in einem Schwarzmeerhafen, sondern wesentlich näher zu der Stelle, an der das Schiff aufgebracht wurde.

Nein, diese Kaperung samt der dann folgenden Geschichte ist nicht der Stoff für einen Thriller, wie in diversen Presseerzeugnissen zu lesen war, bestenfalls für ein drittklassiges Schmierenstück , in dem ein ehemals kommunistischer Staat die Kontrolle über sein Waffenarsenal offenbar teilweise verloren hat und ein nahöstlicher Staat, der einen Militärschlag vorbereitet, sich offenbar Verteidigungswaffen dagegen vom Leibe halten will.

Gesichtswahrung inbegriffen
Um Gesichtswahrung geht es natürlich auch, also heuert man
(Mossad) offenbar für ein Paar Rubel Leute an, Leute, die dem Abschaum der Gesellschaft zuzuordnen sind, fährt mit einem weiteren Schiff der Arctic Sea dicht auf, lässt diese Kleinkriminellen mit einem Schlauchboot dann die Arctic Sea kapern und vorübergehend von der Seekarte „verschwinden“.

Teilt dies dem Heimatland der offenbar illegalen Ladung und Crew so deutlich mit, dass wohl sogleich verhandelt wird, wie auf einem heruntergekommenen orientalischen Basar, Gesichtswahrung ganz oben auf der Tagesordnung.

Der Öffentlichkeit wird aber eine Piratenstory a la Somalia serviert. Blätter fragen sich, ob wir nun am Horn von Afrika leben, die Ostsee zu einem Piratenmeeer geworden sei .
ZEIT-Herausgeber Josef Joffe (ZEIT vom 3.9.2009 Seite 10) versucht schliesslich die Ereignisse in einer Randglosse ins verschwörungsreiche Absurdistan zu befördern.

Geheimdienstleute aller Herren Länder lachen sich derweil ins Fäustchen, wissen sie samt ihren Regierungen natürlich längst, welch schmutziges Spielchen hier gespielt wird.

Ende gut – alles gut?
Nein, denn Israel hält weiter daran fest, die Atomanlagen des Iran anzugreifen, wie die FAZ zutreffend
heute berichtet.

Die Presse, die den Unfug eines „somalischen Piratenakts“ teilweise wider besseres Wissen verbreitete, hat es nicht anders verdient, dass ihre Auflagenzahlen schrumpfen.

Was jetzt noch bleibt sind ein paar Aufräumarbeiten, z.B. der „Prozess“ gegen die Piraten, bei dem natürlich nichts ausgeplaudert werden soll und darf.

Die Crew der Arctic Sea ist schon entsprechend im Lefortowo Gefängnis in diesem Sinne instruiert worden.

Nein, dies ist kein gutes Ende, nicht für den Frieden, nicht für die Verantwortung der Presse und nicht für die Öffentlichkeit, die das Vertrauen in die Politiker längst und in die Berichterstattung der Presse zunehmend verloren hat.

Infowars – In the interview here, NBC’s David Gregory completely ignores Pakistan president Asif Ali Zadari when he declares that Osama bin Laden was an “operator” for the United States. Gregory wants to know if Zadari believes Osama is alive. He wants to know why Pakistan has not gone after Bin Laden.

Before “everything changed” on September 11, 2001, the corporate media published truthful stories about Osama bin Laden and his relationship with the CIA. “As his unclassified CIA biography states, bin Laden left Saudi Arabia to fight the Soviet army in Afghanistan after Moscow’s invasion in 1979. By 1984, he was running a front organization known as Maktab al-Khidamar — the MAK — which funneled money, arms and fighters from the outside world into the Afghan war,” Michael Moran wrote for MSNBC on August 24, 1998. “What the CIA bio conveniently fails to specify (in its unclassified form, at least) is that the MAK was nurtured by Pakistan’s state security services, the Inter-Services Intelligence agency, or ISI, the CIA’s primary conduit for conducting the covert war against Moscow’s occupation.”

The CIA’s intimate relationship with Osama bin Laden came to light during a the trial of Mohamed Rashed Daoud al-’Owhali and Khalfan Khamis Mohamed for the 1998 bombings of two American Embassies in Africa. Giles Foden wrote about the “deep and insidious connection” between Osama bin Laden and the CIA on September 13, 2001, for the Guardian.

“FBI investigators examining the embassy bombing sites in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam discovered that evidence led to military explosives from the US Army, and that these explosives had been delivered three years earlier to Afghan Arabs, the infamous international volunteer brigades involved side by side with bin Laden during the Afghan war against the Red Army,” Alexandra Richard wrote for Le Figaro on October 11, 2001.

In the same article Richard reports that a CIA agent met with Osama bin Laden at the American Hospital in Dubai in July, 2001, where the terrorist underwent surgery. “While he was hospitalized, bin Laden received visits from many members of his family as well as prominent Saudis and Emiratis. During the hospital stay, the local CIA agent, known to many in Dubai, was seen taking the main elevator of the hospital to go to bin Laden’s hospital room.”

Not only did the CIA and its ISI partner create MAK and ultimately what the corporate media would call al-Qaeda, they also created the Taliban, although you won’t read that in the New York Times. The ISI organized and the United States, Britain, and the Saudis funded the madrassas (religious schools) that nurtured the fanatical Wahhabi Taliban. “They were literally the orphans of war [a war orchestrated by Zbigniew Brzezinski against the Soviets], the rootless and restless, the jobless and the economically deprived with little self-knowledge. They admired war because it was the only occupation they could possibly adapt to. Their simple belief in a messianic, puritan Islam which had been drummed into them by simple village mullahs was the only prop they could hold on to and which gave their lives some meaning,” writes Phil Gasper.

Tom Griffin – Recent weeks have seen an explosion of interest in Twitter, a social networking application which has been used by thousands of internet users to pass on news, views and rumours about the situation unfolding in Iran in the wake of the disputed presidential election.

The Iranian struggle is not however, the first conflict in which emerging ‘Web 2.0’ social media technologies have played a significant role. Israel’s offensive in Gaza in December 2008 – January 2009 provides an important precedent which shows that, despite its undoubted potential for empowering new forms of bottom-up organisation, the social web is not immune from very traditional propaganda techniques.

Operation Cast Lead – The First Social Media War
The roots of Israel’s media strategy in Gaza emerged in the aftermath of the 2006 Lebanon War. The Winograd Commission appointed by the Israeli Government to look into the conflict criticised a lack of co-ordination in the country’s media effort. This led to the creation of the National Information Directorate in the Prime Minister’s Office to co-ordinate efforts across government departments.[1][2]

The new directorate became operational some eight months before the Gaza conflict, and began planning for the offensive two months later, well before the events that ostensibly led to the breakdown of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.[1] As well as co-ordinating government ministries, the directorate also liaised with bloggers and community organisations. [3]

One key reservoir of new media expertise in Israel was the Interdisciplinary Center at Herzliya, a private college with some notable connections to Israeli intelligence. It hosts the Institute for Policy and Strategy formerly headed by Uzi Arad, an ex- Mossad intelligence director and currently an advisor to Benjamin Netanyahu. Arad was questioned by the FBI and barred from the US for several years because of his contacts in Washington and Herzliya with Larry Franklin, a US official jailed for leaking classified documents to the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee.[4]

IDC Herzliya’s GLORIA Center is also the base for the Middle East Review of International Affairs, the journal from which the British Government plagiarised elements of the February 2003 ‚dodgy dossier‘ on Iraq.[5]

In June 2007, the IDC’s Sammy Ofer School of Communications became the home for a new centre with an explicit remit to develop new media technologies for ‚telling Israel’s story to the world‘, The Asper Institute for New Media Diplomacy.

According to its founding statement , the Institute „provides workshops on creating effective new media advocacy campaigns and works with students in producing video, audio and written content about various aspects of life in Israel for use in new media channels such as the blogosphere, virtual worlds, social networks, computer games, pod casts and more.“[6]

The Institute’s project’s include a media fellows programme , which trains 15 students in „promoting Israeli advocacy using new media tools“ each of whom „will be expected to be on call ready to provide credible, first hand information on their experiences in Israel.“[7]

Also notable is a year-long Israel advocacy course for international students called the Ambassador’s Club.  This programme is run by the Institute in conjunction with US-based Israel advocacy organisation StandWithUs, and the Israeli Foreign Ministry.[8][9]

The three-way relationship between IDC Herzliya, StandWithUs and the Foreign Ministry was central to Israel’s new media operation following the launch of Operation Cast Lead in Gaza.

As the Israeli offensive got under way in December 2008, the Sammy Ofer School and StandWithUs came together to launch an online operation entitled Help Us Win.

Working with Stand With Us, the school’s dean, Dr. Noam Lemelshtrich-Latar and Major Reserve Jonathan Davis of the IDC, prepared the IDC students with relevant information that would help their cause. Asaf Talmor-Wertheimer, CEO and Co-Founder, Atarim Group Ltd. took time from work to join the Help Us Win cause as one of the group leaders.[10]

The project established two situation rooms, in Herzliya and Jerusalem, staffed around the clock by 15 to 20 volunteers whose role, according to the JTA news agency, was to „promote pro-Israel content on social networking Web sites, respond to online opinion polling and try to alter the tenor of discussions in Internet chat rooms.“[11] In the US, the New York office of StandWithUs was also co-ordinating with these efforts.[12]

One of those hired by StandWithUs to lead the project was social media consultant Niv Calderon.[13] In an online résumé Calderon described his role during this period as „social media presence and crisis management for the Israeli For[e]ign Ministry during operation Cast Lead“.[14]

Calderon issued an appeal for volunteers on his personal website on 29 December, and provided an update on progress on 1 January.[15][16]

So what have we been doing so far?

Fighting the „First Social War“ made us realize we are fighting a multi-platform, multi-language, cross-cultural, cross-technology battle. Two days ago(Tuesday) I took part in building the Jerusalem Social Media Situation Room for the recent Israel Hamas conflict. Yesterday I’ve joined forces (along with other friends) with the second situation room in the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya which generously hosts us and let us use its facilities, personnel and connections.[16]

The post highlighted the following activities:

This is what we’ve got so far:

1- A blog: Help Us Win. The center of attention.
2- A multi language Status Report center that can show you (currently in English and French) what’s going on all over the social web, divided to tabs for the different subjects and languages.
3- A Recruiting System – please register if you wanna help.
4- a Twitter account.
5- Two Facebook groups, in English and French.
6- A Press Releases Blog for government and IDF press releases. They should be more available anyway.[16]

According to Calderon, the tools used by HelpUsWin up to this point included: Gmail, Google Docs, WordPress, Tumblr, Picasa Web, Netvibes, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and Wufoo Forms.[16]

They also produced a social networking application called QassamCount, to track the number of Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel. This was initially created for Twitter by Dan Peguine, who went onto develop a version for Facebook with Arik Fraimovich.[17]

75,000 people had downloaded the application by February 2009, according to Calderon, who predicted that its influence would long outlast the conflict:

Most people haven’t removed it and it reminds us of things we don’t hear on the everyday news anymore, it travels the social web (and the social graphs), it shows you what we’ve been trying to say all this time, all these 9 years of crazyness that we’ve enduered, that no country will allow its citizens to be targeted. As the Qassams are the justification for operation Cast Lead , QassamCount is bookmarking tool and the constant reminder to the public around the world that there is more than one truth in this story.[18]

According to one member of the group, Ahuvah Berger, the HelpUsWin team also advised the Israeli government on its own extensive official social media effort.[19]

In the opening days of the conflict, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit established its own blog and YouTube channel featuring footage which purported to demonstrate the precision of Israeli targeting in Gaza.[20] The Israeli Consulate in New York also launched its own Twitter page. The first message announced an online press conference about the conflict with the Consul for Media and Public Affairs, David Saranga.[21]

As the conflict wore on, such tactics were widely seen to be successful.  Historian Avi Shlaim suggested that the National Information Directorate had managed to establish three core messages in the international media, messages which he suggested amounted to ‚a pack of lies‘.[22]

It was not Hamas but the IDF that broke the ceasefire. It did so by a raid into Gaza on 4 November that killed six Hamas men. Israel’s objective is not just the defence of its population but the eventual overthrow of the Hamas government in Gaza by turning the people against their rulers. And far from taking care to spare civilians, Israel is guilty of indiscriminate bombing and of a three-year-old blockade that has brought the inhabitants of Gaza, now 1.5 million, to the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe.[22]

Guardian contributor Rachel Shabi suggested that the PR offensive was enabling Israel to prolong the physical assault on Gaza.[23]

Indeed, that’s a core discussion within the Israeli media: how long have we got before the world forces us to stop? Reports, especially in the first week, comprised interviews with Israeli correspondents in Europe and the US commenting on how well the media had swallowed the Israeli message.[23]

Following the unilateral ceasefires which ended the operation in mid-January, Herzliya became the venue for an evaluation of Israel’s social media effort.

The GLORIA Center at IDC gathered about thirty Israeli bloggers and members of Israel’s foreign and defense ministries for an informal gathering to evaluate the blogging effort during the Gaza war, new techniques and future challenges. Topics discussed included lessons of the Gaza battle for blogalogical warfare, live-blogging, new technologies and interactions with government. Bloggers delivered short presentations on their personal experiences and discussed future plans for cooperation.[24]

The lasting legacy of Israel’s approach to new media during the conflict was reflected in June when Consul David Saranga told the 140 Characters Conference in New York that Twitter had revolutionised Israeli diplomacy.[21]

Saranga said his goal is to use any platform necessary to present Israel’s voice.

„I believe that if we want to win the cyber war – War 2.0 – the only way to win it is by coalitions, by bringing our people on board in order to participate in this conversation,“ he said.[25]

Even as Saranga was speaking a new conflict was unfolding, which would bring Twitter and its political potential to global attention as never before.

Twitter, Iran and the Green Revolution
In the aftermath of Iran’s disputed election on 12 June, thousands of Iranians took to the streets to protest against the return of incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad.[26] In the face of a government clampdown on the international media, the internet became a key source of news on the ‘Green revolution’, and nowhere more so than Twitter. Thousands of users turned their icons green in solidarity with the protestors, and passed on, or ‘re-tweeted’, reports from ‘twitterers’ inside Iran. In many cases, they removed the original sources and listed their own Twitter locations as Tehran, in the hope of confusing the Iranian authorities. They even (with the help of the US State Department) persuaded Twitter to postpone a scheduled maintenance to allow coverage of events in Iran to continue.[27]

Not everyone was enthusiastic about this development, however. US blog Charting Stocks claimed to detect an Israeli hand behind the explosion of Iranian coverage on Twitter.

I decided to do a google search for 2 of the 3 – @StopAhmadi and @IranRiggedElect. The first page to come up was JPost (Jerusalem Post) which is a right wing newspaper pro-Israeli newspaper.
JPost actually ran a story about 3 people “who joined the social network mere hours ago have already amassed thousands of followers.” Why would a news organization post a story about 3 people who JUST JOINED TWITTER hours earlier? Is that newsworthy? JPost was the first (and only to my knowledge) major news source that mentioned these 3 spammers.[28]

The Jerusalem Post defend its coverage as “part of an online documentation of Iranians‘ reaction to the election results on social media outlets” and argued that many stories spread on Twitter had subsequently been verified by journalists.

Jan Peters – A report in the New York Times on August 13 confirms that the CIA planned and organized secret prisons from the German city of Frankfurt/Main. At least three secret prisons were administered by the CIA branch office in Frankfurt beginning in 2003.

These illegal prisons belonged to the worldwide network of „black sites“ to which the CIA transferred many of its prisoners in its „war against terror.“ There were at least eight such secret prisons maintained by the CIA outside the US. The prisons run from Frankfurt included two that were located respectively in the Romanian capital of Bucharest and a remote part of Morocco. A third is alleged to have been in the Polish town of Kiejkuty, near the Szymany airport. A fourth prison was located in Lithuania.

The secret prisons were used to extort information from prisoners using methods of torture that would not have been possible in the US. The director of the Frankfurt CIA branch office at that time, Kyle D. Foggo, told the Times that these measures were organized from Frankfurt because „it was too sensitive to be handled by headquarters.“

In September 2006, then US president George W. Bush admitted the existence of secret prisons for the first time. These torture prisons were used to systematically subject those deemed to be terrorist suspects to sleep deprivation, waterboarding and beatings in order to obtain information or extort confessions. The CIA arrested „potential mass murderers“ on the „battlegrounds of the world“ and imprisoned them in secret locations where the suspects were subjected to „hard, necessary and effective methods of interrogation,“ as Bush claimed.

The secret prisons had to be set up outside of the US, because they contravened existing US law. The fact that the methods of torture employed by the CIA also violated international law was obviously a matter of indifference for the US government as well as for the German and European authorities.

Each of these prisons was designed to accommodate six prisoners and was constructed in identical fashion in order to confuse prisoners as to their exact location. The prisons were completely isolated and designed in such a way as to prevent life threatening injuries during interrogations. The floors were covered in skid-proof material, with plywood walls to cushion the impact when prisoners collided with the walls.

According to the New York Times, after the attacks of September 11, 2001, the „sleepy supply center“ of the CIA in Frankfurt moved into action. The budget of this branch office was awarded an extra seven million dollars by the Bush government. At a later point this expanded budget was then trebled.

Frankfurt became the most important supply base of the US secret service in Europe. In addition, the city developed into an important logistics base for US operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, organizing supply flights for CIA deployments on virtually a daily basis.

Foggo, who was director of the Frankfurt CIA branch office, was well known for his organizational expertise. He worked for the CIA for over 20 years before pleading guilty to corruption charges in 2008 and receiving a sentence of three years in prison. Previously, in late 2004, he was appointed third-highest official of the CIA, following his deployment in Frankfurt. In the 1980s he was active in Honduras for the CIA. At the time, the US was conducting a dirty proxy war against Nicaragua, which was organized by the CIA in Honduras on behalf of the American government under president Ronald Reagan.

The role of the German government
Neither the office of the German chancellor, nor the interior ministry, the foreign office or the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND), have commented on the New York Times article. This silence must be taken as an admission that the German government agencies were aware of what the CIA was doing.

When questioned by the media individual police officers have declared that they knew nothing about the activities of CIA agents in Germany. This was the business of the Americans, they claimed. „Even if we got wind of anything,“ a high-ranking official told the Süddeutsche Zeitung, „nothing would have changed anyway.“

As long ago as November 2005, the Washington Post and Human Rights Watch had uncovered the illegal prisons run by the CIA, and its criminal practice of kidnapping terror suspects. After these first exposures the secretary-general of the Council of Europe opened a preliminary investigation. It was led by former Swiss public prosecutor Dick Marty, president of the Commission for Human Rights of the Council of Europe. As special prosecutor Marty carried out investigations into the secret CIA prisons from 2005 to 2007.

In June 2006 Marty submitted an initial report. It stated that it could not definitively prove the existence of the secret prisons, but presented substantial evidence to indicate the use of such facilities by the US secret services. Marty continued his investigations and prepared a second report. He discovered close cooperation between European secret services and the CIA, but met with a wall of silence and denial on the part of the European governments.

The second Marty report of 2007 criticized the German and the Italian governments in particular for systematically suppressing the truth about the prisons. In Milan, leading political agencies closed down the investigation in the same year against 26 CIA agents who had openly kidnapped the Egyptian Imam Abu Omar in Italy in February 2003 and transported him to an Egyptian torture prison.

Marty recently told the Frankfurter Rundschau that it was difficult to uncover the whole truth about all of the alleged terrorist suspects kidnapped during this period. In the main, European governments had „made little effort“ to clarify what had taken place, he said.

Between 2005 and June 2009 a German parliamentary committee of inquiry investigated the methods used by the CIA and its collaboration with the BND. The list of the topics to be examined was long. It included, in addition to the secret prison system and secret CIA flights over Germany, the participation of BND agents in the Iraq war, the knowledge by German intelligence sources of CIA kidnappings of German terrorist suspects, and the monitoring of journalists by the BND.

In the event, the committee of inquiry served as a whitewash for the intelligence services and the German government. In its final report of June 19 the committee concluded that the Social Democratic Party-Green government at that time had no knowledge of either the secret transportation of suspects or the existence of secret prisons. The committee of inquiry expressed no interest in the fact that an inquiry set up by the European parliament had already uncovered some time before that between 2001 and 2005 CIA transport planes had landed on no less than 336 occasions at German airports. It is completely unrealistic to expect that the government and its intelligence services had no knowledge of such flights.

The final report of the Bundestag committee served above all to cover the tracks of the current German foreign minister and SPD chancellor candidate, Frank-Walter Steinmeier. During the period in office of the SPD-Green government (1998-2005) Steinmeier was head of the German chancellery and personally responsible for the secret services. At the end of 2002 it was Steinmeier who prevented the Turkish citizen Murat Kurnaz, who lived in the German city of Bremen, from entering the federal republic. Accused of being a terrorist, Kurnaz was detained in the US Guantánamo detention centre. The US authorities had offered to free Kurnaz in 2002 due to lack of evidence. Because of Steinmeier’s refusal to readmit Kurnaz to Germany, however, he was forced to remain a further four years in Guantánamo.

World Content News – Es ist grotesk: Russland weiß, was sich hinter dem Drama um die Arctic Sea verbirgt. Die NATO hat genaue Kenntnisse und schweigt. Die schwedischen und die finnischen Schifffahrtsbehörden sind im Bilde, was sich im Juli tatsächlich auf der Ostsee abgespielt hat, aber kein Kommentar. Dies lässt nur einen Schluss zu: Bei Bekanntwerden würde ein Staat (und das muss nicht zwingend Russland sein) nachhaltig seine Reputation verlieren.

Beinahe sicher darf man sich inzwischen sein, dass es sich nicht um eine banale Entführungsgeschichte handelt, sonst hätten die Behörden in Russland längst die Flucht nach vorne angetreten, hätten das Schiff freigegeben und würden es nicht länger der Öffentlichkeit vorenthalten.

Bedrohter und geflücheteter Wojtenko: Hingucken und aufklären

Das Mysterium besteht fort, nicht mal ein aktuelles Foto gibt es von der Arctic Sea. Anderslautende Behauptungen stammen von einer einzelnen deutschen Zeitung ohne jeglichen Beleg. Das Versteckspiel mit dem Schiff könnte drei mögliche Ursachen haben:

Experten könnten sofort erkennen, dass da auf dem Schiff außer Holz noch etwas ist (oder war), was dort nicht hingehört. Dies ist die derzeit gängigste Vermutung. Es soll sich um Raketen für den Iran handeln, so wird fast einhellig spekuliert. Zur Zeit konkurrieren zwei Thesen miteinander, nach denen entweder der israelische Geheimdienst (Mossad) oder der russische Geheimdienst (FSB) das Schiff gekapert hat. In beiden Fällen beruft man sich auf nicht näher bezeichnete Quellen.

Zweitens: Das Schiff könnte Spuren aufweisen, die auf eine militärische Operation oder auf ein Unglück hinweisen, die man besser nicht offenlegt. Es wurde ja von den Behörden schon angedeutet, dass der Frachter beschädigt sei.

Und dritte Möglichkeit, wohl die prekärste, aber inzwischen auch nicht mehr ganz ausgeschlossen: Bei dem Beuteschiff handelt es sich nicht um die Arctic Sea, sondern um einen anderen Frachter, der mit der AIS-Kennung der Arctic Sea unterwegs war. Das eigentliche Schiff wird entweder versteckt oder ist – gesunken.

Dies klingt wild und unwahrscheinlich und das Verschweigen wäre eine Katastrophe für sich – wenn da nicht eine seltsame Bemerkung eines Anwaltes aus Litauen wäre, der einen der mutmaßlichen Piraten vertritt: Er hätte gehört, in der Nacht der Kaperung wäre ein Schiff mit russischer Besatzung auf der Ostsee in Seenot geraten, es hätte auch Tote gegeben, dies wäre jedoch nicht öffentlich gemacht worden. Schwere Kost, aber jeglicher Beweis dazu fehlt.

Wild geworden: Ein Schiff – viele Signale – Save our Souls?

Fest steht: Die AIS- und Radarsignale, die die Arctic Sea vor ihrer angeblichen Kaperung von sich gegeben hat, sind ein mindestens ebenso großes Mysterium, sie zeugen davon, dass sich das Schiff auf keiner üblichen Transportfahrt befand.

Der Seefahrer- Blog, der sich an die Analyse der Spuren gemacht hat, kommt zum Ergebnis: Hier waren an diesem Tag mindestens zwei Schiffe mit der gleichen Funkkennung unterwegs, ein Signal davon war manipuliert. Auch der Experte Michail Wojtenko, der sich auf Schiffsunfälle spezialisiert hat und der soeben, weil unbequem geworden, seinen Job verloren hat, sprach sehr früh von kopierten AIS-Signalen.

Es gibt ferner die Annahme, das die „Arctic Sea“ schon kurz nach ihrem Auslaufen etwa 15 Seemeilen entfernt vom finnischen Hafen, ein Schiff oder Boot zu Besuch hatte, deren Besatzung an Bord wollte. Darauf deute ein typisches Kursmanöver hin, so der Analyst.

Was immer sich dort auf der Ostsee abgespielt haben mag, die dortigen Behörden, die die Seewege überwachen, dürften ein recht genaues Bild haben. Sagen aber nichts. Nur ein ungenannter Experte aus NATO-Kreisen meint: „Es ist unglaublich, dass sich so etwas unter den Augen Europas abspielt. Und wir müssen auch noch zugucken und schweigen.“

Dabei ist es eigentlich zum Schreien: Weil die Kasse stimmen muss, von wem auch immer, jetzt hat die Presse auch noch einen Millionär unter den Piraten entdeckt: Demnach ist der wegen Entführung angeklagte Dimitri Savins im richtigen Leben auch noch Vorsitzender einer pleite gegangenen estländischen Schifffahrtsgesellschaft namens Pakri Tankers, die sich auf den Transport von Chemikalien und Erdölprodukten spezialisiert hatte.

Die Mitarbeiter des Unternehmens sollen nicht schlecht gestaunt haben, als sie in den Nachrichten ihren eigenen Chef sahen, der von den russischen Befreiern abgeführt wurde.

Diese Nachricht hat allerdings reichlich lange gebraucht, bis sie in die Presse kam. Und die Identität des Anführers Andrej Lunev, der angeblich vor drei Jahren bei einem Unfall als verstorben galt, hat sich im nachhinein auch nicht bestätigt. Es handelte sich bloß um einen Namensvetter.

Der geschasste Wojtenko glaubt inzwischen, wichtige Details der komplexen Geschichte enträtselt zu haben. Und er hat versprochen, die ganze Wahrheit über die „Arctic Sea“ herauszufinden.

David Dastych – It’s truly an upside down world when “The Association of Retired Al-Qaeda Operatives” and the “Organization of Former Guantanamo Detainees” get in on the act to demand prosecution of CIA operatives.

This blogger says it best:

I don’t believe in “torture” as a method for extracting information should be used on everyone but if aggressively interrogating people that are able to build armies of people willing to strap a bomb to their body and walk into a shopping center and attempt to kill as many people as possible I am all for it! If it saves the lives of 1 or 100 Americans, I am all for it.

Only a lawyer who became president would even bring this up. A leader leads by pointing the way forward. A lawyer builds his case by pointing out everything the “other guy” did wrong.

NO, they did their best in protecting this country, and we should thank them for it. It may not have been the best thing for Humanity or of course for Al Qaida operatives.

The Obama mandate to please all of our former enemies and terror loving adherents by revealing, punishing and jailing the alleged CIA abusers will only incite more violence against US soldiers and other noncombatant targets in the future. 
And persecution and prosecution will only chill future attempts to obtain valuable information by those whose job is to discern current and future attacks, they will be hampered by the thought—-will I be prosecuted for “Saving America” from future 9-11 attacks.

The current Report on Interrogations Describes “Threat to Kill Detainee’s Children” , wow – such a startling revelation, how horrible of them. 
But 2,933 persons ( from 90 countries ) died on 9-11-2001………in order to prevent such catastrophes. They ( CIA ) engaged in behaviors that did not amount to the loss of life on 9-11-2001. 
There perseverence in interrogating the terrorists was warranted…….I wonder if the apologists will scream and shout prosecute the CIA officials ……when a terrorist nuclear or chemical weapons device is detonated / released in the U.S. in the future. 


Wake up…..despite Obama’s “let’s be nice to the terrorists and hope they will go away,” choose peaceful means of dissent or become naturalized US citizens pursuing profit over wanton murder…..it’s not going to happen in Obama’s lifetime. 
And what’s with this following the Army’s 19 points on humane and gentle interrogation techniques, it will certainly be a BUST. Terrorists only respond to Terror.”

World Content News – Gibt es bald neue Einzelheiten über die tatsächlichen Vorgänge an Bord der Arctic Sea? Nach einem fast zweiwöchigen Verhör durch den russischen Geheimdienst sind die meisten Besatzungsmitglieder des Frachters seit Samstag wieder in Freiheit und wurden in der Stadt Archangelsk von ihren Angehörigen in Empfang genommen. Und auch an der Piratenfront tun sich inzwischen erstaunliche Erkenntnisse auf.

Zunächst hielten sich die Matrosen der Arctic Sea über die Geschehnisse reichlich bedeckt. Nicht besonders wohl hätten sie sich bei der Vernehmung gefühlt, sagte einer der Männer. Ansonsten gab es erst einmal keine weiteren Auskünfte. Vier Personen der Besatzung, unter ihnen der Kapitän, halten sich mutmaßlich weiterhin auf der Arctic Sea auf.

Später ließ sich dann wenigster der Ehefrau eines Matrosen entlocken:

„Die Piraten haben ihn böse geschlagen, und ihm einen Finger gebrochen. … Sie waren die ganze Zeit unter Waffen. Und Sergej sagte zu mir: Es ist nicht nötig, dass Du alles weißt. …„. Auf die Frage was er über die Fracht an Bord der Arctic Sea wisse, sagte die Frau: „Sergei sagte mir, da war nur Holz. Und alle andere Vermutungen über eine verbotene Ladung sind Nonsense“ (Quelle: Komsomolskaya Pravda).

Von den russischen Behörden gab es auch 24 Stunden nach der Freilassung noch keine amtliche Verlautbarung.

Gestern noch erhielt das Gerücht um einen möglichen heimlichen Waffentransport neue Nahrung“. Ein Koordinator der Befreiungsaktion glaubt, dass das Schiff durchaus eine verbotene Ladung an Bord gehabt haben könnte, sieht aber die Auftraggeber nicht in russischen Armee- oder Geheimdienstkreisen. Und eine mögliche Zusammenarbeit der Crew mit den Amateur-„Hijackern“ wird weiterhin nicht ausgeschlossen.

Anhand von diversen Medienberichten, die mit den Angehörigen der Personen sprachen, die inzwischen der Piraterie beschuldigt werden, kristallisiert sich heraus: Sie waren auf Jobsuche und sie waren keinesfalls die knallharten Profis, wie die Bilder von der Festnahme suggerierten. Wer sie aber anheuerte und wie viele von den Crewmitgliedern in den Coup involviert waren, bleibt unklar.

Ziemlich sicher scheint, dass die über ihren Anwalt verbreitete Darstellung, sie wären vom estnischen Hafen Pärnu aus mit ihrem motorisierten Schlauchboot in See gestartet, völliger Humbug ist.

„Es ist ein kleiner Hafen, jeder der hier rein- und rausfährt, wird in unserem Logbuch festgehalten„, sagt der dortige Hafenmeister Riho Prints. „Und falls doch, hätten sie es an einer abseitigen Stelle in der Nacht wagen müssen. Dazu kommt: Die Männer hätten mindestens 500 Liter Treibstoff in dem kleinen Boot mitnehmen müssen, um die Strecke zum angeblichen Überfallsort zu schaffen. Die dortige Tankstelle hätte aber keine erhöhte Spritabgabe an diesem Tag gehabt.

Damit steht ihre Version, die Männer wären vom Kapitän der Arctic Sea zum Bleiben gezwungen worden, ebenfalls auf schwachen Füßen. „Die Angeklagten haben die Besatzungsmitglieder in verschiedene Kajüten gesperrt und sie dort isoliert, so dass sie keinerlei Möglichkeit zum Widerstand hatten“, sagte der Sprecher der russischen Ermittlungsbehörde.

Alle Besatzungsmitglieder?

Es war der 17. Juli abends, als sich sechs Esten in Tallinn sich von ihren Angehörigen verabschiedeten und sich auf den Weg machten. Sie fuhren zum Hafen, möglicherweise nahmen sie die Fähre nach Helsinki. Einer von ihnen, Yevgeny Mironov, dem wegen einer früheren Strafe eine Meldepflicht auferlegt wurde, hatte sich sogar vorher ordnungsgemäß bei der Polizei abgemeldet. Am nächsten Tag machten sich dann Dmitry Savin und Vitaly Lepin aus Litauen auf die Reise, um sich mit den Esten zu treffen. Wo ist nicht belegt.

Es sieht nicht nach einer eigenständig geplanten und durchorganisierten Aktion aus, eher nach einem jener Gelegenheitsjobs, wo man nicht allzuviele Fragen stellen, sondern einfach mit anpacken sollte. Die Mutter von Dmitri Bartenev beteuert in der Zeitung „Komsomolskaya Pravda„, die „Piraten“ hatten sogar einen ordentlichen Vertrag:

Das ist der momentane Stand, wenn man den Angehörigen glauben darf, danach verliert sich alles in Spekulationen. Dazu kommt das grandiose Versteckspiel Russlands mit dem Schiff, das „gnädige“ Verhalten der NATO und der europäischen Behörden, der massive Geheimdiensteinsatz von angeblich 20 Ländern. Die seltsamen Manöver der Arctic Sea vor dem „Überfall“ nicht zu vergessen. Die späte Meldung der Reederei von dem Vorfall an die Behörden.

Die These, dass die Männer unter Eigenregie oder unter fremder Federführung ein Schiff überfallen haben, nur um in einem sehr späten Stadium ein im Vergleich mickriges Lösegeld in Höhe von 1,5 Millionen Dollar zu fordern, vertritt inzwischen fast niemand mehr. Auch nicht der eingangs zitierte namentlich ungenannte Militärexperte, der in der „Komsomolskaya Pravda“ zugab, er wisse mehr als er sagen dürfe und gleichzeitig eine unbestimmte baltische Waffenschmuggler-Mafia beschuldigte.

Seiner Ansicht nach sind Waffen in der baltischen See erst dann zugeladen worden, nachdem die Arctic Sea den finnischen Hafen Pietarsaari mit Holz an Bord verlassen hatte. Womöglich noch vor dem „Überfall“. Klingt auch nicht sehr plausibel, da technisch wohl ziemlich aufwändig. Der Stopp auf Hoher See Stunden vor dem Einlaufen in den finnischen Hafen und die verrückte Herumkurverei auf dem Rückweg Dutzende Seemeilen vor dem Überfallort Öland sprechen wohl eine komplexere Sprache. Spekulationen kommen und gehen, das Rätsel aber bleibt.

Nach Informationen des russischen Marineexperten Mikhail Vojtenko soll das Schiff nicht direkt nach Noworossijsk geschleppt werden, sondern zuvor noch einen anderen Hafen anlaufen. Nach Angaben der russischen Presse könnte dies Algerien sein, da das Holz ursprünglich für dieses Land bestimmt gewesen sei. Eine Bestätigung gab es nicht. Laut Medien liegt der Frachter extrem tief im Wasser.

Other Court proceedings in Edmonds’ case were also blocked by the assertion of the state secrets privilege, and the Congress was gagged and prevented from investigating her case through retroactive re-classification of documents by DOJ. In May 2004, the Justice Department retroactively classified Edmonds‘ briefings to Senators Grassley and Leahy in 2002, as well as FBI briefings regarding her allegations. The congressional gag applied to all information related to Edmonds’ case, including the interrogation and arrest warrant issued for her sister in Turkey as a result of a leak regarding Edmonds’ monitoring of certain foreign targets of the FBI. During recent depositions conducted by the Justice Department in a lawsuit filed by Edmonds under FTC, Department of Justice and FBI attorneys, Dan Barish and Ernest Batenga, questioned witnesses on and discussed information that was previously declared state secrets. This information was communicated on the record in the presence of parties who did not have security clearance. Information such as the nature of Ms. Edmonds’ work with the FBI, the specific FBI units where she performed translation, FBI target countries, the arrest warrant issued by the Turkish government for Ms. Edmonds’ sister, and congressional letters regarding the consequences of Dickerson’s espionage case in Turkey and here in the U.S., all of which were retroactively classified by the Justice Department, was discussed and put in the court record.

Edmonds’ responded to this recent development: “The Department of Justice has now confirmed what we knew all along: it is abusing the state secrets privilege to avoid accountability, not to protect national security. How can it be that the very same information is a state secret when it would assist plaintiffs suing the government, but not a state secret when it would assist the government in defeating plaintiffs? It’s long past time for Congress to put an end to the government’s misuse and abuse of the state secrets privilege.“

Currently Edmonds, her attorneys, and civil liberties group are reviewing this latest disturbing development and its implications on other SSP and government secrecy cases. The law firm Motley Rice has also been notified since their case is still active.

“This latest revelation proves that throwing Ms. Edmonds’ case out of court was a travesty and a ploy, because no state secrets would have been revealed,” said David K. Colapinto, General Counsel for the National Whistleblower Center. “If the courts won’t prevent the government from using the State Secrets Privilege as a trump card to cover-up agency wrongdoing and to defeat meritorious claims, like Ms. Edmonds’ whistleblower case, then Congress must act to stop this odious practice,” Colapinto added.

„These latest revelations are indicative of the arbitrary and self-serving and excessive use of the state secrets privilege by the Executive Branch in order to defeat specific cases of concern at the time,“ said Mark S. Zaid, a Washington, D.C. attorney who served as counsel to Sibel Edmonds during her state secrets litigation and who has handled several such cases. “This is just another example of why either the Judiciary needs to aggressively challenge state secret assertions by the Executive Branch or Congress needs to intervene and legislatively limit the government’s ability to utilize the privilege,” added Zaid.

„This proves the point we have been making all along,” said Michael D. Ostrolenk, National Director of the Liberty Coalition. „The use of the state secrets privilege against Mrs. Edmonds is not about protecting true national security. The government was not created to protect itself and various political and financial interests but to secure Americans rights.

Nancy Talanian, Director of Bill of Rights Defense Committee, stated „The DOJ’s opportunistic classifying and divulging information raises suspicions about its motivation for using State Secrets to silence Ms. Edmonds. Now that the classified information has been revealed, it is time for Ms. Edmonds to have her long-awaited day in court.“
